Designing Multilingual Font Packs for Learning Apps

Language products often look fine in one script and broken in another because typography decisions were made too late. Fonts are a product system decision, not a cosmetic detail.

Step 1: Build a script-to-font manifest

{
  "latin": "Inter",
  "hiragana": "Noto Sans JP",
  "han_simplified": "Noto Sans SC"
}

Step 2: Add fallback chains per script class

.text-han { font-family: "Noto Sans SC", "PingFang SC", sans-serif; }
.text-jp  { font-family: "Noto Sans JP", "Hiragino Kaku Gothic ProN", sans-serif; }

Step 3: Measure line-height and clipping in snapshots

assertNoClip(renderTextSample("語彙トレーニング", "text-jp"));

Pitfalls

  • One global line-height for all scripts.
  • No fallback for rare glyphs.
  • Manual visual checks instead of automated snapshots.

Validation

  • All supported scripts render without clipping at target sizes.
  • Fallback behavior is deterministic between iOS versions.
  • Snapshot tests cover key lesson templates.
